Supported Pinterest URL Formats
Which Pinterest links work here, which never will, and why — so a link that returns nothing has an answer.
Links that work
pinterest.com/pin/123456789/
One pin — video, image, GIF, carousel slides or Idea Pin pages.
pin.it/AbCdEfG
The same, after the short link is followed to the real address.
pinterest.app.link/…
The same again — Pinterest’s app links resolve like short links.
pinterest.com/username/board-name/
A board, in batches, with its sections kept and duplicates filtered out.
pinterest.com/username/
A profile: the account’s picture first, then its pins in batches.
pinterest.com/username/_savedpinterest.com/username/_created
Treated as that profile.
pinterest.co.uk, .de, .fr, .ca…
Every Pinterest country domain, handled identically.
pinterest.com/en-gb/pin/123456789/
A locale segment in the path is stripped before the lookup.
Two conveniences on top of that: you can paste text that happens to contain a
link rather than the bare link itself, and you can leave off the
https://. Both are handled before anything is fetched.
Links that will not work
pin.it link
Dead short links bounce to Pinterest’s home page; you get a clear message rather than an empty result.
pinterest.com/search/…
Accepted, but Pinterest ships no pin data to logged-out visitors on a search page. Open a pin from the results instead.
/ideas/, /today/, /discover/, /topics/
Browse surfaces rather than content, and gated the same way.
pinterest.*, pin.it and pinterest.app.link are accepted.
If the format is right and it still fails
The link is probably fine and something else is going on — a pin that exists but is stream-only, a file that opens in a tab instead of saving, or a download that landed somewhere you did not expect. Pinterest download not working? Here’s every fix goes through each of those, and the full download guide covers the normal path for every format.
Common questions
Does a pin.it short link work?
Yes. The short link is followed to the full pinterest.com address before anything else happens, so it behaves exactly like the long link. The one exception is a short link whose pin has been deleted or made private — those bounce to Pinterest’s home page, and the tool says the link has expired rather than failing silently.
Do country domains like pinterest.co.uk work?
Yes. Any Pinterest country domain resolves the same way, and a locale segment in the path — /en/pin/… or /en-gb/pin/… — is stripped before the pin is looked up.
Why does a search results link return nothing?
A /search/ link is accepted, but Pinterest sends no pin data at all to a logged-out visitor on a search page — so there is nothing on the page to resolve. Open a pin from the results and copy that link instead.
Can I paste a whole sentence with a link in it?
Yes. If the text you paste contains a link anywhere inside it, the first one is used. A bare address with no https:// in front of it works too.
Why will a private or secret board never work?
Because the request is made from a server that is not logged in to any Pinterest account. It sees exactly what a signed-out visitor sees, and a secret board is not part of that. No tool that works from a link alone can reach one.
